All investigations begin with research!
The best tools of a paranormal investigator are knowledge, an open mind, your ears, eyes, perception and your commitment to finding the truth through empirical research and investigations!

Invaluable tools other than an open mind!
Write down observations, random thoughts, sketch a map.
Although we do have forms to be filled out by each investigator, it is a good practice to take notes.

Three kinds of instruments are generally used to detect electro-magnetic fields (EMF). They are the electric field, magnetic field, and radio frequency (RF) meters.

The favorite for most paranormal researchers are the Multi-Field Meters, which measure two to three of these fields at once.

The ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) Electromagnetic field detector. These models are preferred for paranormal research. They usually feature a fast reacting needle gauge, at least two sensitivity scales, and are very easy to use. It should be noted that all gaussmeters, electric field meters, RF / microwave meters, etc. can only measure the strength of the field at the location of the meter.

The meters can be used like mobile probes while walking around during an investigation.

Paranormal researchers make use of RF Meters for monitoring microwave and radio frequencies and to help detect hidden sound or spy equipment.

Our meters of choice are the Dr.Gauss EMF Detector, which has two levels of measuring EMF. The E.L.F.Zone Meter, it has an audio alert as well as a light display i.e. , (safe, caution, danger). It also alerts you to a low battery, which is very useful!

Cold spots are another manifestation of the depletion of energy by paranormal events. A spirit will use energy to manifest itself.

Since cold spots are short-lived and tend to move about, conventional thermometers are not fast enough to record the phenomenon.

Our thermometer of choice is the Mastech 19-Range Digital Multimeter Thermometer with K-type thermo probe.

We do have IR instant-reading infrared digital thermometers; however we do not reply to heavily on them as they do not pick up air temperature.(if an IR thermometer is pointed at a window it will show the temperature of the window). We are looking for the temperature of the air around us!

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) have been picked up on just about any common recording devices from radios and tape recorders to televisions.

For paranormal research, the best tool is a digital recorder that can be uploaded directly into a personal computer for analysis.

For any paranormal investigator, a camera is a necessity!

Sony Night Shot, Handycam, Digital 8
Olympus all weather digital 35mm standard photography. We also have on hand disposable cameras, any brand will do.

Any camera can work, but certain cameras offer more advantages when trying to capture the paranormal on film.

"Digital photography has reached a level where I believe it is finally acceptable in paranormal research. By using cameras that start at a level of no less than 5 megapixels and taking advantage of all of the options available to us, we can actually gather evidence with our digital camera that is comparable to that of a 35 mm camera." Troy Taylor

An audio editing program is an option, it cleans up possible EVP files on your recorder. Potential evidence is examined and stored for later dates. Download pictures, store investigation files, etc.

II believe modern technology has it's place in today's society, I also believe in the good old fashion way of notebooks, pens and file cabinets.

I I always like to have a back up set of records to refer to, paper records! Safety is always our number one priority!
